Shadow Patcher of Ephemeral Solutions
Nothing is more permanent than a Friday patch
The Shadow Patcher doesn't fix root causes. They fix symptoms, fast, and move on. The AI makes this pattern devastating because it can generate a plausible-looking patch for anything in seconds. The patch works on the happy path. The patch works in the demo. The patch is in production for three years.
Symptom
A codebase held together by patches named 'temp,' 'quick,' and 'TODO-refactor.' Functions with comments from before the last reorg that nobody is brave enough to delete. When something breaks, the response is another patch, not an investigation.
Why It Matters
Each patch is small and reasonable. Together, they form a system nobody understands. The Shadow Patcher's patches become the system. Root causes compound beneath them until the patches are the only thing holding the architecture together — and the patches are the architecture's biggest problem.
What the Chapter Gives You
How to spot the difference between a fix and a patch, why AI-generated patches are especially dangerous, and the counter-moves that force root-cause analysis without killing velocity.
