The Autonomy Mirage Is Not Accountability
The Autonomy Mirage lives in the gap between what a system can sometimes do under the right conditions and what an organization starts claiming it can therefore be trusted to do under operational conditions.
Bounded automation is useful. The danger begins when generated action starts substituting for listening, validation, or accountability. The agent decided describes what happened without answering who is responsible for whether it was the right thing to decide.
The organizations that use AI agents most effectively will not be the ones talking about agency most confidently. They will be the ones that stay closest to the human: owners who understand the output, product teams that still talk to users, and operators who read the logs instead of trusting the summary.
